Opening post by backlinktalk
A freelance project often stalls because the working arrangements were never made explicit. A short onboarding process turns an accepted proposal into a clear starting point for both the client and the freelancer.
Confirm the inputs before promising a delivery date
List the files, brand guidance, access and decisions needed for the first milestone. Give each item an owner and a requested date. If work depends on those inputs, explain how a delay changes the schedule. Avoid collecting passwords in a shared document; use the client's approved access process and request only the permissions needed.
Agree how feedback will work
Choose one place for project updates and one person to consolidate approval. Record the expected response time without assuming either side is constantly available. Conflicting comments from several stakeholders should be resolved before another revision begins.
Use a short kickoff summary
- Desired outcome and the deliverables included.
- First milestone, acceptance criteria and dependencies.
- Client approver and freelancer contact.
- Feedback format, revision allowance and next check-in.
- Process for approving extra work or changed requirements.
A hypothetical newsletter project might start only after the approved source material and audience brief arrive. The first milestone could be an outline, allowing the client to correct the direction before a full draft is written.
