Lost backlinks: how do you decide what is worth recovering?

#1
Check whether the linking page still exists, whether the destination changed, and whether the link was removed intentionally. A redirected destination may need a clean mapping rather than an outreach email.

Prioritize links with clear relevance and referral value. Record the old source URL, destination URL, reason for loss, and proposed action.

How do you separate worthwhile recovery work from normal churn?

Before requesting a restored link, check our own destination. An old URL that redirects through several hops or lands on unrelated content needs attention first.

I would record the source status, actual link presence, destination status and relevant replacement. That turns a lost-link alert into a concrete action instead of automatically generating another outreach email.

For a recovery log, separate a confirmed editorial removal from a broken source or a changed destination. Those cases lead to different actions.

I would include the original observation date, the live check date and the relevant replacement where one exists. This keeps a temporary fetch failure from automatically becoming an outreach task.
