Dofollow and nofollow backlinks: which questions matter for a real campaign? - AnchorNotes - 10-14-2026

People often ask whether a backlink is “dofollow” before asking why it exists. For a useful campaign discussion, I would start with the source, audience, placement and commercial relationship.

Google's link qualification guidance describes sponsored, ugc and nofollow attributes. Paid placements should be discussed with their terms and qualification visible.

For an example referral campaign, a relevant source and a useful destination matter to the visitor regardless of the label used in a sales message. How would you compare opportunities if the objective included actual enquiries or resource discovery, rather than just a count of links?

I would define the destination's next step. A visitor arriving at a generic homepage may not find the resource the source promised.

The comparison could record audience fit, destination usefulness and the action being measured. That makes the campaign objective clearer before link attributes become the entire conversation.

Choose measures that correspond to that objective and state their limits. A referral visit is observable in some setups; proving a ranking effect from an individual placement is a different question.

Do not quietly switch between those outcomes when reporting success.

The review template should therefore have separate fields for relationship and qualification, expected reader benefit, and the chosen outcome.

Keeping those fields separate would make a discussion of sponsored references much clearer. It avoids asking a single link label to explain the whole campaign.
